We first meet Paul after he had just been tested. Despite losing his father, mother, sister and brother to AIDS he is hopeful. He believes he will get better. He has seen how other people have become healthy from taking the antiretroviral medicine. ARVs only became available in 1996 and the huge decrease in their costs has made them more widely available in sub-Saharan Africa.
