New Media Entrepreneur to Lead Company's Expansion
London – November 10, 2008 – Today, (RED)™, the brand created to engage business and consumer power in the fight against AIDS in Africa, announced it has appointed Sebastian Bishop as Chief Executive Officer of its international operations. The appointment comes as (RED) approaches its third year, with more than $112 million contributed to the Global Fund, and looks to expand its presence globally.
Bishop, whose career has spanned developing advertising campaigns for some of the world's best brands to creating and leading one of the most successful internet businesses in Europe, will focus his initial efforts on increasing the brand's presence across the UK and Europe. He will be responsible for managing and growing (RED)'s portfolio of partners across the region, building awareness and understanding of the (RED) brand and seeking new opportunities to increase (RED)-driven contributions to the Global Fund.
At the age of 26, Bishop founded Espotting, the company that pioneered search marketing and pay-per-click advertising in Europe. Subsequently, he led the company's expansion across Europe, its merger with US-based findwhat.com and the global rebranding of the company under the MIVA name (NASDAQ: MIVA) where he became President.
Bishop started his career in advertising and brand development at Publicis as an art director. He then moved to Rainey Kelly Campbell Rolfe and, subsequently, Y&R London. Bishop created the award-winning campaign that launched Coca-Cola in Russia as well as campaigns for some of the world's most famous brands including Virgin, Diet Coke, HP, Renault and Nintendo.
"It's exciting when (RED), and organizations like it, attract the brightest and the best to work for the world's poorest and most vulnerable. Seb's the perfect man to help the (RED) team build on its success of delivering $112 million already to the fight against AIDS in Africa. And (RED)'s just getting started in Europe…with Seb at the international helm, 2009 looks like a promising year. Already (RED)'s contribution to the Global Fund makes it 14th on the list of contributors, ahead of China and Australia," said Bono, co-founder of (RED).
Bishop has recently brought his business skills to bear on addressing sustainable development goals in Africa. In 2007, Bishop was one of eight entrepreneurs' featured on a Millionaires Mission in Uganda, a Channel 4 documentary that brought eight British business leaders together with business owners in Uganda to share Western entrepreneurial skills to try and bring sustainable relief from poverty to affected communities.
"(RED) is a progressive idea that puts the best minds in the public and private sector to work for the people who need it most – those living with AIDS in Africa, but who can't afford the medicine they need to stay alive. I'm looking forward to growing this initiative across this region and ensuring that the full opportunity for (RED) is realized both offline and online" said Seb Bishop, CEO, (RED) international.
Bishop is currently a member of MIVA's Board of Directors. He is also a non-executive director of Future Plc., the international special interest media group; is Chairman of the Board of Steak Media, the search-inspired communications agency; and is a non-executive Board member of AdJug, the online advertising exchange.
Bishop will report to Susan Smith-Ellis, CEO of (RED) worldwide.
