Stella is HIV positive and her son Davis is not, thanks to treatment that prevents mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Stella discovered she was HIV positive when she lost her eldest children to the disease, an unfortunately common circumstance in Ghana. With the support and guidance of counselors and doctors at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, funded by (RED)-financed Global Fund grants, Stella began antiretroviral (ARV) therapy and adhered to treatment while pregnant with Davis.
Stella’s and Davis’ own futures are bright. As a role model in the Models for Hope program at Korle Bu, Stella counsels those diagnosed with HIV and helps them to understand HIV/AIDS and the treatments available. Davis is energetic and intelligent with a passion for English, Math, and football. Stella says Davis always does his homework and predicts he will become a doctor or lawyer one day.
