With the help of ARV treatment, Paul is able to look after his daughter Emma
  • We first meet Paul after he had just tested positive for HIV. Despite losing his father, mother, sister and brother to AIDS he is hopeful. He believes he will get better. He has seen how other people have become healthy from taking antiretroviral medicine. ARVs only became available in 1996 and the huge decrease in their costs has made them more widely available in sub-Saharan Africa.

  • 3 months after beginning treatment, Paul’s life is transformed: He’s socializing with his friends (who didn’t think he was going to make it), he can go to the market for his wife Loveness, and his daughter Emma can now be with him all the time.

You can now watch Paul’s story in “The Lazarus Effect” on HBO, YouTube and Channel 4 (UK). Check full film schedule here.
