Currently there are four countries in Africa receiving (RED) money:
In order to help eliminate AIDS in Africa, the Global Fund selects established AIDS grants with sound performance to receive (RED) dollars. To date, (RED) partners and events have generated more than $135 million for the Global Fund. No overhead is taken out of these funds – 100% of this money flows to Global Fund financed AIDS grants in Ghana, Lesotho, Rwanda and Swaziland.
In these countries the money is helping to finance comprehensive national HIV and AIDS programs led by the ministries of health, to: provide antiretroviral treatment for children and adults, help prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, provide essential counseling and testing activities to reduce the overall risk of HIV transmission, and launch clear and accurate communications campaigns to promote prevention.
Funds are given to these programs based on tangible and measureable results. More money is allocated by the Global Fund to (RED) grants according to the grants’ own requests – usually every 3 to 6 months – and only sent once results in-country have been reported and verified.
The number of countries receiving (RED) money will continue to increase over time, providing ongoing support in the fight to eliminate HIV and AIDS in Africa.
